3 sets of 4d6 re-rolling 1's? Why not just put down the number you want? And, they were HEROES when it was OD&D (3d6 straight down), folks. Have you guys tried Freeform? Or GURPS maybe? Seems those would work better for the PCs you're aiming at. Great show!
